Voters snubbed Anti-LGBTQ push

Referendum to obstruct marriage equality fails

Anti-LGBT forces in Romania collected enough signatures to call a voter referendum to obstruct marriage equality by rewriting the definition of "family" in the nation's constitution.

Voters went to the polls Oct. 6-7, 2018. By law, 30% of all voters had to show up for the referendum to have validity. Only 20.41% of voters voted. The referendum failed due to inadequate voter turnout.

LGBT activists and leaders had called on voters to boycott the referendum. U.S. anti-LGBT activists were involved in the referendum campaign.
