Then & now. Out & proud!

Posted

Thank you Central PA for a FABULOUS Pride. Total attendance numbers haven’t been officially tallied, but make no mistake about it, it was one for the record books! We haven’t seen that many people in Riverfront Park in a long, long time. We were dangerously close to running out of wristbands and we were happy to see so many of you enjoying the day.

Thank you to all of our patrons, sponsors, vendors and exhibitors, entertainers – both musicians and drag stars, Silent Witness Peacekeepers, the City of Harrisburg and most importantly, our volunteers – we could not do this without you and your support!

Last week was a stormy week for our community not only in terms of the weather but with news of a ban on Transgender Americans serving openly in our Armed Forces and the Justice Department arguing Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not prohibit discrimination against LGBT Americans.

While the days and months ahead look pretty cloudy and stormy, Yesterday; the Sun shined bright. All day along on the banks of the Susquehanna River so many of you were out and proud; undiscouraged and undeterred. It looks like this year’s festival Theme: Then & Now, Out & Proud has taken on an additional meaning.

Be not disheartened! Our rainbow community is resilient and determined. Together with those on the right side of justice, we will never allow anyone or any institution steal away our pride or stop us on our fight for full and unencumbered equality. For some of us painfully know all too well the sacrifices we’ve made to get to this point in our movement.

All of the festival supplies and equipment have just been stowed for another year, including the beautiful rainbow flags that adorn the park for Pride. While we have to put our flags away, all of you should be steadfast in keeping your flags flying.

Those flags, whatever your identity stand for our solidarity and against all enemies of love, truth and liberty. May your flag fly high as it announces to the world that NO ONE will steal your pride!
