PennDOT hopes to allow 'X' gender designation on driver’s license

With a target date of mid-2020, PennDOT is gearing up to allow licensed motorists not to disclose their genders on their driver's licenses. Motorists will be able to select “X’ on the gender section of a license application.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf told the Associated Press he supports the change. "I believe that we ought to recognize and be supportive of folks who are looking to figure out what their gender identity is," Wolf said.

The proposed change is not the first one regarding gender identification on a driver’s license. In 2010, PennDOT allowed changes in gender markers so that transgender residents could correctly identify their gender on a license.
